What 3/10 net 30 means
3% off if you pay within 10 days of the invoice date; otherwise the full amount is due 30 days after the invoice date.
What skipping the discount costs
Skipping the discount means paying the full amount 20 days later than the discounted one. That is like borrowing the discounted amount for 20 days and paying the discount for it: as a yearly rate, the discount divided by what is left after it, times the days in a year, divided by 20.
- Simple, 365-day year3 ÷ 97 × 365 ÷ 20 = 56.4%
- Simple, 360-day year3 ÷ 97 × 360 ÷ 20 = 55.7%
- Compounded over a year(1 + 3 ÷ 97) ^ (365 ÷ 20) − 1 = 74.3%
The break-even rate is 56.4% a year, simple on 365 days. If your cash earns, or your borrowing costs, less than that, paying by the discount deadline comes out ahead.
